Cat's Favorite Toy, July 5, 2007

I just bought these for my girlfriend's cat, and as soon as I gave them to him, they became his favorite toys. He'll play fetch with them for hours and carries them all over the house. I have no idea if they actually clean his teeth (his breath still stinks if you ask me), but he has the greatest time playing with these. I don't know if all cats will love them this much, but this cat definitely does.

I purchased these for my cat in the hopes they would stop chewing on my shoes and so far it's worked. Both cats go absolutely crazy over these chews - carrying them around the house and batting them all over the floor. Just when I think they're done playing, they run back and pounce on the chews. The only con is that my cats are little chewing devils and the cloth fringe at the ends didn't even last an hour. They still enjoy playing with the ring section but I'm a little concerned because I think my cats may have actually eaten the string fringe. Cats seem to love it but it's not that durable... Would probably buy again for my cats but snip off the fringe before giving it to them.

I just received my pre-ordered copy of the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding yesterday! I couldn't wait to open it and start digesting all the wonderful newly revised information. This classic title is even better now. The newest edition is user-friendly and includes all the information a new mother needs to get off to a good start with breastfeeding and parenting. It is also a resource that a mother will be able to use during her whole breastfeeding experience from pregnancy through weaning! This is a must-have book for all breastfeeding women!

I've been waiting for the new edition for the past year or so. When it came in the mail this week I dove into it immediately. I used information from the book at our LLL meeting that very evening and have used information with moms I've counseled since then. While retaining the voice of the earlier editions in a way that is very comfortable to someone who started off with the "old blue WAB" this new book combines evidence based research, new insights of lactation consultants, input from working moms, and simply scads of new suggestions. The basic message remains the same "mothering your baby through breastfeeding," but this volume is so comprehensive, that it's much more of a stand alone than the older versions (which really were enhanced by being supplemented by books like Mothering Your Nursing Toddler, the Breastfeeding Answer Book etc). It's not that those other books don't still have a place, although the BAB is really in need of updating as well. It's just that now the most important information from those volumes, along with a lot of other information as well is now in The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. I'd give this book a far higher rating than a 5 if I could. It's a one volume guide that will help mothers and fathers better understand their baby, better understand why breastfeeding is the normal way to feed their baby, better understand how to get past bumps in the road.

A big well done to the authors!

I'm not bf'ing yet, but as an expectant mother I wanted to get some info before trying to deal with it once the baby's here. The book has made me feel very confident. It has all the info you need.

However, even though there are chapters about pumping for going back to work, the authors really push their agenda that you're not doing your baby any favors if you don't stay home with him. One section had me in tears (and I do blame the hormones, not the book) saying that "if you plan on going back to work, it's ok because you might change your mind once you get there." I felt like in many different sections they go on and on about how it's so hard to leave your baby and the baby will have so much stress if you take it to a baby sitter or day care.

I would love to find a good breast feeding book that gives all the info found in this one without sentimental judgements. I am going back to work, and I think today it should actually be expected that most working mothers will return. This is the best I've found towards making it seem like it's going to be ok, that I will be able to do this, but I really with they would have left their personal opinions on how bad it is to leave your child to go to work out of it.

This was an easy read of 248pp. It concerned a continuation of a longitudinal study first begun by Dr. Lewis Terman of Stanford Univ. in 1921. Termin died in 1958 and the authors continued with their interpretation of his original study. The original group of subjects were chosen for what Termin considered to be their high IQ's and they numbered 1548 being born circa 1910.

The text is filled with numerous abbreviated self-assessment questionnaires to give the reader an idea of what the original subjects had to answer. I found the book generally informative and definitely written for the lay person, but also somewhat subjective in many of the conclusions reached. The trouble with all self-assessment questionnaires is that they are biased in giving the view of the assessee, rather than an outside observer.

The main idea behind the book is that there is no one particular thing that leads to longevity, but that it is simply a result of some genetics modified by lifestyle choices which are less challenging than those dangerous decisions made by some living closer to the edge [as choosing to smoke or use illicit drugs]. In other words, it was the totality of things done during a lifetime rather than anyone thing that might cause someone to live to be a hundred.

The authors determined that the best CHILDHOOD PREDICTOR of longevity was CONSCIENTIOUSNESS, the trait of being dependable and following through on life goals, as they defined it. They also felt that good health leads to happiness and longevity rather than happiness leading to good health.

Here is a partial list of some things the authors felt were true:
1. Although breast feeding is good for the baby's health it does not of itself lead to a longer lifespan.
2. Divorce by parents while the subject was a child was the leading indicator of a shortened lifespan.
3. Starting school before the age of 6 or learning to read before starting school was detrimental to a long life. I disagree but this a a subjective opinion on my part.
4. Women who had a higher frequency of achieving orgasm during sex tended to live longer than their less fulfilled sisters. At least we can assume they were happier if not longer lived.
5. It was the happiness of the man in a marriage that predicted the couple's later health. That would seem to be somewhat contradicted by the previous point.
6. Playing with pets did not lead to a longer life. Again, I would disagree.
7. Both more masculinized males and females as measured by the self assessment scales tended to die sooner than their respective more feminized cohorts.
8. Being married to the same person for a long time [however, one might define that] benefited males as far as longevity, but added little or nothing to the lifespan of the female partner.

The book was enjoyable and very easy to read and understand whether one agrees with all the points or not, so I would suggest reading it and then deciding for yourself how you feel about the many items discussed.

I was fascinated by how much of "what everyone knows" turned out to be wrong when lifelong information about a large group of people was carefully studied. Among the surprises--the geeky awkward boys from elementary school who grew up to be professionals had longer lives than the glib, sociable jokesters who were the center of attention. And the findings about marriage really changed how I understand the popular wisdom about getting married to live longer, showing how women who got OUT of bad marriages may have actually improved their longevity. I knew that women live longer than men, in general, but I had never thought about their "feminine" characteristics as the explanation. That would have seemed like circular reasoning, until I read about the longevity benefit of being more "feminine" in both the men and the women. And the scales that are in the book to test yourself give a little flavor of the kinds of information used in the research. Lots of information about how women thrived (and not always in the same way as men thrived). The book made me think differently about my own life, from the perspective of the patterns that lead to longer lives. And it made me feel a lot better about how hard I work, given that the really hard-working and successful people actually lived longer! Very clear and readable.

Build a lasting practice., September 5, 2005

This book is an 8 week program on meditation for beginners where each week the book teaches you a different meditation technique. The program has you meditate for just 8 minutes a day every, which taught me to concentrate on my meditation more while building a habit of meditating every day. Although I have tried some Zen meditation in the past, the techniques I learned in this book gave me better tools to meditate. After completing the book I have been able to keep up with my meditation practice. If you would like to build a lasting meditation practice in your life, I highly recommend it.

An excellent book for beginners, but skip the companion CD, August 12, 2004

This is an excellent book for beginners and skeptics (and I was both). It makes meditation easy. Really! It's also very well-written, reader-friendly, easy to read, and witty.

The book plugs a companion CD, available only at the author's website for $17. I bought the CD, have used it, and would like to review it here, so that those of you who buy the book can better decide whether you should spring for the CD.

The CD contains 16 tracks.

The first eight tracks are very short (e.g. 2-minutes), and summarize some of the content from the book. These short tracks are useful reminders of some of the key points in the book, but as the CD tells you, it is not intended to substitute for the book.

The rest of the CD consists of 8 "guided meditations," one for each week of the book's 8-week program. In each of these tracks, the author spends a few seconds telling you what activity you're supposed to do, then he tells you to start, then 8 minutes later a gong sounds, signaling you to stop. About every two minutes during the meditation, the author interrupts you to say things like "Has your attention drifted? That's okay, just return your focus to your breath." This type of reminder might be useful, especially at first, but after a while, I found it intrusive. Also, the sound of his voice is not especially soothing or gentle. For me, it's better to just do as the book says - use a common kitchen timer set to 8 minutes.

Aside from the occasional interruptions, there is complete silence during the 8 minute meditations. I prefer the silence to the soft new-age music or nature sounds on some other meditation CDs.

In my opinion, the CD is not a good value: the total amount of content on the CD is about 20 minutes, maybe less. This is due to the fact that the CD has a lot of silent parts during the guided meditations; this silence is appropriate, but it reduces the amount of time available for spoken content. And, more importantly, all of the spoken content on the CD--and much more--is already in the book.

On the plus side, the service was excellent - the CD arrived two days after I ordered it.

In summary, I recommend the book highly if you're a beginner. But my opinion is that you skip the CD and save your money.
